With Drake’s More Life dropping this past weekend, this week we’ll be doing breakdowns on the “playlist” project, starting with the samples used here and later full breakdown of contributing production. We’ll be listing only prominent samples incorporated, as small vocal excerpts and etc not that important for this piece. Also including Genius’ piece on all the samples used.
Free Smoke (Produced by Boi-1da + Allen Ritter)
Samples ‘Roll Up’ by Tony Yayo & Danny Brown (Produced by Doe Pesci)
Using a somewhat unexpected sample source, Boi-1da samples a Danny Brown and Tony Yayo joint called “Roll Up” off their collaborative project Hawaiian Snow from 2010 as the main meat of the beat.
Sidenote: Shout out to Pesci, fellow Queens native.
Jorja’s Interlude (Produced by Noah “40” Shebib) (Sample appears at 1:12)
Samples ‘Doing It Wrong’ by Drake (Produced by 40) (Sample appears at 3:50)
In this early Interlude, I’m guessing 40 had probably reached into his files and pulled up session he worked on “Doing It Wrong” and incorporated it in this beat.
“Get It Together” Feat. Black Coffee and Jorja Smith
Produced by Nineteen85 + 40
Samples Black Coffee’s “Superman”
Nineteen85 grabs Black Coffee’s “Superman” afrocentric drum beat and chords and slightly speed it up for World Drizzy.
‘KMT’ Feat. Giggs
Produced by Produced by Ness & Chef Pasquale
Samples ‘Sonic The Hedgehog – His World-Original’ (Composed by Tomoya Ohtani)
Chef and Ness takes the memorable theme music from the Sonic the Hedgehog Original Soundtrack, Vol. 1 and incorporates elements from it to make one of the more harder beats on this project.
‘Glow’ Feat. Kanye West (Produced by Noah “40” Shebib & Kanye West)
Samples ‘Devotion’ by Earth, Wind & Fire)
I feel confident it was Kanye who threw in this Earth, Wind & Fire sample to transition the song from the very dope beat 40 laid down.
