For those who are late, samples never left.
Here’s the list we’ve compiled of the best beats that features prominent samples in 2017.

8. Yo Gotti + Nicki Minaj “Rake it Up”
Produced by 30 Rocc and Mike Will Made It
Samples Too Short “Freaky Tales”
Some would be surprised this summer banger actually featured a sample. 30 Rocc interpolated the bassline of Too Short’s “Freaky Tales”, with Mike Will applying those aggressive Ear Drummer style 808 on this summer mainstay. 30 goes into detail about creating the beat here.
7. 21 Savage “Bank Account”
Produced by 21 Savage (with additional production from Metro Boomin)
Samples Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson “Flashbulbs”
In another slight surprise, the main elements of this beat were actually conceived by 21 himself. The same features a sample of Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s “Flashbulbs”, which 21 chops up, applies a simple 808/kick, snare pattern.
The Atlanta native goes into more detail with Metro’s involvement:
“Bank Account” was just straight me. Metro just dragged it out to make it long enough for me to rap on and added the little pauses in the beat and bringing the beat back. But the melody, the bass, the sample, the hi-hat; I did all that shit.
6. Drake “Free Smoke”
Produced by Boi-1da + Allen Ritter
Samples Tony Yayo + Danny Brown’s Roll Up
Produced by Doe Pesci
Boi-1da uses the main riff in Yayo’s song and applies some aggressive 808s with Allen adding keys to support the beat.
5. Jaden Smith “Icon”
Produced by Chaos
Samples Cab Calloway “The Hi De Ho Man”
It’s been a while since we’ve had a dope use of a vocal sample as the basis of a beat but Chaos uses Cab Calloway’s vocals to make a banger for the Fresh Prince’s son.
4. Kendrick Lamar “DUCKWORTH.”
Produced by 9th Wonder
View the multiple samples from WhoSampled.
9th went into detail on his work on Kendrick’s Damn with Complex earlier this year:
People always ask me, why do I choose samples the way I choose samples? I don’t usually choose samples with voices in them, because I care about what the soul singer is saying. It’s more of the instruments behind it. I’m trying to capture the instruments behind what the sample is saying, instead of the Blueprint algorithm where the sample says something, and you have to rap around that. That was legendary in its own right, but I like the instruments behind the voices. It just felt good to me, man.
3. Rick Ross “Idols Become Rivals”
Produced by Black Metaphor
Samples Camilo Sesto “Agua De Dos Rios”
Black Metaphor broke down creating this banger here with ProducerGrind
2. Kodak Black “Tunnel Vision”
Produced by Metro Boomin, Southside, and Cubeatz
Samples Inti-Illimani’s El Aparecido
With CuBeatz replaying the Chilean sample, El Aparecido, Metro and his frequent collaborator, Southside, chops this beauty into a banger that’s worthy of winning.
1. Future “Mask Off”
Produced by Metro Boomin
Samples Carlton Williams “Prison Song”
The sample that helped inspire countless memes replaying it’s flute melody in 2017, also serves as the foundation for what young Metro uses to make one of the biggest rap records in 2017.
